| Introduction: |
A major aldehydic product formed by peroxidation of ω-6-unsaturated fatty acids that is regarded as a specific marker of lipid peroxidation. Inhibits proliferation and induces differentiation of HL-60 human leukemic cells. Also induces cell death in murine alveolar macrophages. An inhibitor of state 3 respiration at micromolar levels that causes a transient increase in cytosolic Ca2+. Irreversibly inhibits Na+-K+-ATPase activity (IC50=120 mM).
